One of our most favourite places to take our gravel bikes off to is Glenmalure which is nestled in the heart of County Wicklow, Ireland and it is a (secret-ish!) haven for cyclists seeking an unforgettable adventure. Often dubbed the 'Garden of Ireland,' Wicklow boasts a stunning landscape, and Glenmalure is no exception. This blog post will be your guide to exploring Glenmalures captivating beauty on your trusty gravel bike.
A Route for All Seasons
The routes that we cycle around Glenmalure are mostly off road on good quality fire roads and many of these routes can be found on Strava. The one we do on a regular enough-ish bases is about 32km loop with an elevation gain of just over 1000 meters. While it's achievable any time of year, autumn paints the forests in a magical display of colours, making it a truly special time to visit.
The good news is that the cycling routes around Glenmalure are not particularly difficult. The beauty of the routes around there lie in its accessibility. Primarily consisting of fire roads, it caters to cyclists of varying skill levels. There are some inclines reaching up to 10-13%, but nothing that a determined rider can't conquer. And if you ever feel the need for a breather, feel free to dismount and push your bike up a steeper section. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit will be even greater! And remember, the breathtaking views from the top will make every pedal stroke worthwhile.
Glenmalures magic transcends the physical route itself. An absolute haven awaits you as you cycle through this captivating landscape. Particularly during autumn, Glenmalure transforms into a kaleidoscope of colours. The forests are filled with fiery hues of red, orange, and yellow and create a spectacle that will leave you breathless (or maybe that’s all the cycling you’ve been doing to get there….!). Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife encounters! Deer and sheep are frequent visitors to these parts, and you might even spot some interesting birds soaring through the skies. Remember, as you share the Wicklow Way with walkers, be courteous and yield to them whenever necessary (they will always have the right of way on the Wicklow Way).
What kind of bike and clothing would you need for cycling though these beautiful forests?
When it comes to choosing your two-wheeled companion, a gravel bike or a mountain bike would be perfect for this route. Both provide the necessary stability and grip to navigate the fire roads with confidence.
Remember, Irish weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains. Dressing warmly is essential, particularly during autumn and winter. A waterproof jacket is a non-negotiable item in your backpack. Glenmalures remoteness adds to its charm, but it's always better to be prepared for anything. It is always advisable to check the weather forecast before you head out. Word to the wise however - there are many spots along the way where there is no internet available (we did say it’s fairly remote!!) so it’s no harm to have a few bike computers with you operating off GPS and a route on it to ensure you get back to your car safely.
We would also always recommend that you pack some snacks is a wise decision. As we said earlier, the hills around Glenmalure are not particularly demanding but it is no harm to have some snackies with you to keep your energy levels up! A sandwich tucked away in your our front bag will be a welcome treat after a good bit of climbing!
Fueling Up for the Journey
For those who need a caffeine fix mid-ride, a slight detour off the gravel trails to the charming village of Rathdrum is the answer. Here, you can find cosy cafes to relax and recharge before tackling the rest of the day out. And after conquering the route, treat yourself to a delicious meal at the Glenmalure Lodge. They offer a menu that will surely satisfy your post-ride cravings. As you savour your meal, reminisce about the days adventure and the stunning scenery you encountered.
